New City Nirvana

What do you look for if you are moving to a new city? A church? A favorite activity? I thought I was looking for a house but my head kept turning as I drove down the city's main street, the names of stores were catching my eye. It was like I had shoe-dar or something, I needed to know that the place had more to offer than my favorite supermarket and cultural activites. One place, Lee Lee's, caught my eye and I made a sharp turn out of traffic and headed into the parking lot. Of course it was a shoe store. Moving is an adventure, but it is also sad. You can always visit friends, but what of the boutiques and neighborhood stores that I have come to know and love? The ones that send me holiday cards that say "Happy Kwaanza" when I am absolutely sure they had never heard of Kwaanza before knowing me or gifts of Casmere gloves with my initals in rhinestones for my birthday and specially scented candles? I walked into this shoe boutique cautiously with my daughte...

Desperate Dilemmas

So, I loved Desperate Housewives, even when I thought things were going downhill. When Alfre Woodward moved in, I knew they were stretching for a storyline, counting on her celebrity to add some spice to the street. Sure, she's a big star, but did anyone notice that all of the Housewives were hotties? Even the Ice Queeen Housewife? I thought I could go with it though, even though thery couldn't let the sister be as sexy as the others. She should have been Holly Robinson Peete or Vivica Foxx, or someone in that vein (No offense to Ms Woodard) Alfre's character was crazy as a bedbug, and seemed to be resonably minor, but I guess they decided it wasn't working. They wrote the entire family out for next season, or at least it looks that way. But let me ask you this, since the show began there have been how many murders? Three? Four, Five? Maybe six or seven if you count the suicides. So, why is it that the only person who didn't get away with murder was the you...

April Reading

This time of year is always hectic, especially if you have kids. You would think that things would be slowing down near the end of the school year, but instead they speed up, with each child having to do twice as much, which of course means that parents have to do twice as much, too. You can't work less (especially if you are self employed because that means that you will probabaly get paid less), so the other stuff has to go. In my case, I read less in April. Here 'tis-- 1. Baby Brother's Blues - Pearl Cleage. This one was my book club selection for the month. I thought it was a fine read, although I didn't want to read another Black-Man-Down-Low story. Enjoyable and interesting story though. 2. Criss Cross -Evie Rhodes. I didn't think I would like this, but I truly got into this Christian Fiction book disguised as a supernatural thriller. 3. NoWhere is a Place -Bernice Mcfadden- this one was not what I thought it ws going to be, but Ms McFadden did it ...

Fooled You, and Man things

And you thought I was going to let a week go by without posting. Sike! Busy week, busy week, but you know how it is, life happens. Found out this week my car needs a lateral excelerometer. Huh? That is exactly what I said when the technicican told me that. It also needs a new radio and the back windshield wiper doesn't work. No, I don't drive a beater. Its a 2004 American gas guzzler that just went over 50,000 miles. Someone once said that American cars aren't built to last past 50K miles. I trusted what they said, too because every one I have ever had started to act up a soon as the odometer rolled past that fateful point. What kind of coincidence is it that 50K miles is also the point where most warranties end? I fooled them this time, I bought an extended warantty. Ha! Its still time for a new car though, with gas being so high I'm going to check out the hybrid scene. I'm even willing to overlook the funny-lookingness that these cars seems to suffer fr...

Ugly Feet E-mail/Summer Open Toe Shoe Pledge

I got this in an email and I thought I had to share. I do not know who the original author was, put thanks to that person for laying it down. Alright it's that time of year "once" again!!! And based on this email that someone passed along to me I think we need to be reminded of a few things. So my sisters, PLEASE, raise your big toes and repeat after me below.... The Open Toed Shoe Pledge As a member of the Cute Girl Sisterhood, I pledge to follow the Rules when wear sandals and other open-toe shoes: I promise to always wear sandals that fit. My toes will not hang over and touch the ground, nor will my heels spill over the backs. And the sides and tops of my feet will not pudge out between the straps. I will go polish-free or vow to keep the polish fresh, intact and chip-free. I will not cheat and just touch up my big toe. I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow. I will shave the hairs off my big toe. I won't wear pantyhose even if my ...

Shameless self-promotion

Can anybody say "soundtrack"? I had a surprise waiting for me at the Marrying Up opening. The producer, Garrett Davis, and the music director, John Forbes, had a CD sampler waiting for me that featured songs from the show and songs inspired by the show. I have had it in my car CD player and I gotta tell you that it is hot. Music either grows on me or it doesn't and this has certainly done it. I mean, I could have used it for a drink coaster or something, but its worth the money. Of course you can hear the soundtrack song "Marrying Up" at my website, here are some links to some other sample tracks. Open My Heart http://www.ninafoxx.com/stageplay/4nina.html This one features the fabulous Kim Flemming. This sister can sang! She is featured in the play as Athena. How Many Times -This features the sexy Keith Floyd. Check him out in my last post. Lawd! Lawd! Lawd! Keith is featured as Tyson. He is in the second picture down in that post or in my photo ...

Debut News and an Oprah Face Running Picture

Image
Speaking of Running, you know one of my "friends" tracked down the pictures of me running that blasted race last weekend, but I am going to spare you those details. Oprah-face pictures, I hate to admit it, but they were. Thehy sifted through tens of thousands on online pictures. Actually all they had to do was enter a bib number and they can find a runner. I tell you, big brother is watching. I'm sure its useful to someone, I wish I'd thought of it, but as far as I'm concerned, that is right up there with the treadmill that flashes your weight in bug, bright numbers when you step onto it so that all those people on the cardio machines behind you can see it. I am going to share pictures with you of my trip to Atlanta and Alabama this past weekend. I had my first even booksigning in a Walmart Store. I walked in and was greeted by a HUGE banner of myself hanging in the front of the store. I'd always thought that something like that would be like seeing yo...

Capitol 10K Capers

I ran the Capitol 10K this past weekend. I have been waiting about a year and a half for this one, and I finished in decent time too. I'm not ready for a marathon or anything, but I did make a good showing and actually sprint over the finish line. I was actually more ready last year, but come race day it was like rainy and cold and hell, that just didn't make sense. I knew it would be torture, so it didn't make sense to actually torture myself in the rain . That's like playing golf in weather that is too cold. Or too hot. So, although I had not trained for the race, the sun was shining this year and I said to myself, "Self, you can run this race." I got out of bed and put on my oversized shorts and rolled them down at the top,and then chose an appropriateley distracting t-shirt,complete with catchy phrase. I figuired people would be too busy reading my shirt to notice that I sucked as a runner. The Cap 10 is that funny Austin-esque race where folks dre...

Male Guest Blogger Rant....

The Woman's Fault??? A friend had forwarded me one of those things that tend to get forwarded around on the internet these days, and it had to do with the failure of Black Couple. The writer of the article intrigued me for a second, entertained me for a minute, then pissed me off the rest of my day. When I re-read and re-read this part of the article, I became increasingly incensed: "While making public appearances across the country or crossing the church parking lot, the same discussion continues to arise. "Why aren't our Black men willing to commit to serious relationships that lead to marriage?" The short answer is simple. In general, Black men are not typically inclined to put themselves out when their women are already doing likewise; putting out. Whether women realize it or not, their long-term relationship stock takes a sharp hit by and large after giving up the keys to the kingdom without securing a signed territorial deed." Now I'm a brother wh...

The Big Apple Redeaux, New Books and Stage Play information

Miss me? I took a week off from everything to enjoy spring break with my family. I even left my computer at home. I had technology withdrawal for a minute, but once I got past it, everything was good. We went to The Big Apple for a couple of days to take in a play and dined with local family members. New York is really like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates. Everything was very different than my last visit. Don't get me wrong, it was chilly and rainy last time, but this time is was hella cold. For a naturalized Texan such as myself, it was certainly stay in the house weather. I braved the elements even though the wind was fierce and whipped around my chibs like I had done something that deserved a beating. Well, maybe I did, but damn it was frigid. The people were nice this time and I had no Oprah-esque moments at establishments like I did last time at Manolo Blahniks. I'm still recovering. I haven't even been able to buy any Manolo's at Last Call. But th...

February Book List-Good, Bad & Heady

I had a slow February. I only read five books, but I got a lot of other things done. 1. The Awakening-LA Banks. The next installment in the Neteru story of Damali Richards. As good as the last. I already have the next book waiting for me. She wins the read of the month again. It was steamy where you wanted it to be, and most certainly a page turner. The descriptions of the levels of hell were fabulous, and of course political statements werre once again woven skillfully throughout the book.made me want to go out and bite someone. Okay, maybe not. 2. So You call yourself a man,-Carl Weber. I couldn't finish. Life is too short to crawl through a book that isn't holding your interest. I don't know if I was just not in the right frame of mind for this one or what, but I was expecting it to be like The Preacher's Son, which I enjoyed, but it wasn't. Maybe I will revisit it at a later date. 3. Candy Licker-Noire. I truly enjoyed G-Spot, so I was looking ...

Lewd Photos at The Dome

I've told you before that one of the blogs I visit often is Pinkdome.com. They are funny as hell, and even if I don't always agree with them, they are still funny as hell. Fair warning, PINK Dome is a politically based website, so if you aren't that interested in politics, just don't go. Heck, Like I said they are funny as hell and will make even the most disinterested guffaw, so I take that back, go anyway. Anyway, I noticed of late that whenever I went there the website was kinda slow. A little annoying, but bearable. I guess other people just couldn't bear it and complained, because the folks at the dome posted a note saying they discovered the source of the slowness; apparently other sites have been stealing their bandwidth. Now, I really had ever heard about this or at least hadn't paid much attention to it, but bandwidth gets stolen when, instead of posting a photo on a website, the owner of the site does the lazy thing and just links to the photo h...

Book Trailers and Spring Shoes

Image
The book world is all abuzz over the new marketing "trailer" for Lolita's Files' newest book, Sex. Lies. Murder. Fame. You might remember that I mentioned this book in my last lists, it was THE read of the month. I loved it. And I want a book trailer to so folks can send it over the internet. I just got finished reading the Avon list, a forum for Avon Authors. I don't always feel I belong there because although my books have been on the Avon Imprint, the list is heavily Romance, and I don't quite fit there either . I was also a little turned off after they had a discussion about not letting Avon's new Erotica authors participate on the list if they were too "Erotic" or their work didn't fit the Romance arc. Well, a few folks were just hatin' on the new video. You know, I say you can't say sh-- if you less books than she did. Read the book first and then you will see why the video is perfect and groundbreaking. There is reprotedly a co...

Two Steps Back

Seems like technology has us taking one step forward to take two steps back. Late the other night, I realized I had to go to the grocery store. I hate going to the grocery store, but we were out of the stuff folks need, like food. I used to have my groceries delivered by this great online service and all was good, then Safeway bought Randalls and took the service away. Sigh. I've recovered from that trauma and now shop at Alberston's even though it is more expensive, but it is closer and I know where everything is. Hell, my time is worth something, right? I can get in and out with minimal fuss, that is, if I don't take any kids with me. In that case I have to deal with one kid wanting EVERYTHING that is packaged in a colorful box and the other sneaking things into the cart. I would just tie them in the cart, one in the seat and one on the front, the way they used to tie virgins to the front of sailing ships and be done with it, but I believe that Child Protective Services w...

The burning of religion

Isn't it a little suspicious that there is very little in the news about the Alabama Church fires? Five inone day and now four today. All they are saying is that it sounds like arson. For real, though? Maybe they aren't as interesting because whomever is doing it seems tobe an equal opportunity arsonist in that they don't seem to be striking their matches along racial lines, if they are, its not beign reported. It does seem that they are all Baptist churches. They say there is no appranet motive. That's police-speak for "We can't figure it out."
